Foosball Rules Banner

There is no single, internationally recognised, set of rules for table football. Instead, rules tend to be defined according to table type and event organiser.

The differences between rules are partly due to disagreements between players and organisers, and partly due to the marked differences between the different table types.

Pub/Bar Rules

The following rules are loosely based on those used by the Oxford Students Table Football Club.

  1. Games are usually played upto 5 goals, or alternatively out of 9 or 10 (depending on how many balls are in the table).
  2. No spinning - defined as the rotation of any figure more than 360 degrees either before or after striking the ball.
  3. No illegal jarring of the table - note legitimate attempts to block a shot are allowed but 'random thrashing' is not.
  4. Put in should be 'through-the-hole' or go to the midfield of the team who conceded the previous goal.
  5. Bounce outs (where the ball enters the goal hits the back and comes back out) count as goals. Play is restarted as usual from a put in.
  6. In the event of the ball leaving the table, it should be re-served.

Specific Table Rules (Applied in the UK)

Tornado

  • The ball cannot be passed or shot forward from 5-bar from stationary ball position. If the ball goes stationary on the midfield it must touch two players before being played.
  • Time outs may be called during a game by the team in posession of the ball. The ball is restarted from the same position, but must touch two players on the bar before it can be played.

'French-Style' Tables

  • No scoring from the midfield - if a goal goes in, the next team to score legitimately gets an extra goal.
  • Only clean midfield blocking - if a midfield pass is deflected backwards to defence, ball either placed at passing side's midfield or attack!
  • No scoring angled shots from attack.
  • If a conceding team can grab the ball out of the goal before it is lost into the mechanism the goal does not count!
  • Additional rules at the discretion of the French players, depending on what advantages they need to win. You think I am joking...
